Drive Times with Smart Routing |
|
|
Smart Routing creates realistic results |
To create realistic results, drive times need to be calculated using road networks that are suitably detailed and correctly structured to ensure connectivity between each link in the road network. Our journeys are often made more complex when we consider one way streets, banned turns, width restrictions etc. The Smart Routing solution from MapMechanics can create drive time isochrones, time or distance matrices and routes taking into account this complex range of conditions.
In some areas, city locations for example, it can take longer to drive into a shopping centre than it does to deliver out from a depot located at the same place. Smart Routing acknowledges this fact and offers users the option to specify whether the drive time calculation is based on driving from the chosen points or towards them. This is essential for creating intuitive drive times that reflect our everyday experience. |
Drive Time Holes & Islands |
When calculating everywhere that can be reached within a certain time from a specified point, the result is not usually a simple outline.
Within the time specified, it may be possible to travel a long distance along a motorway making the streets around the next junction accessible, but slower roads nearer to the site may not be reachable in the time.
This often appears as an “island” around the motorway junction. Similarly it might be possible to reach the majority of an area around a site but there could be a pocket of housing which takes longer to get to as the access road is of restricted width. This can result in a “hole” in your drive time catchment. With simple menu options, the user can opt to include or exclude holes and islands, depending on the purpose of the analysis. |
Automatic Isochrone Naming |
| The system automatically names the isochrones according to a user specified field (e.g. store name) and the number of minutes. This feature is very important when creating large batches of drive times for multiple locations. |
More accurate Drive Times |
When calculating drive time or ‘how far can be reached in a given time’, many systems "snap to the nearest node". The MapMechanics Smart Routing system is not limited in this way. It creates catchments half way across road links, if only half of the distance can be covered in the selected time. This results in more accurate drive times. |
Intuitive and Clear |
The enhanced drive time system also has a host of features to improve clarity when using and presenting resultant isochrones.
There is optional smoothing, special features to clearly display multiple overlying drive times (for instance, at the coast a 20, 30 and 60 minute isochrones may all reach the sea and go no further), and translucent fills to overlay raster maps. |
|
Fastest Road Quick as Possible |
The Smart Routing module calculates routes quickly in a hierarchical manner directing the route to the fastest road as quickly as possible; in the same manner as a driver would intuitively use a paper map. Once on a main road traveling in the general direction of the destination the system does not consider every option at every junction, it will build a route using the main road while it continues in approximately the right direction.

Choose this option and computing time is only spent assessing options when the current main road terminates or deviates from the desired direction. This feature significantly reduces the time required to create the best route. This is particularly important when network planning and you need to create hundreds of drive time isochrones at a time.

Achievable Delivery Times |
The Smart Routing software produces many isochrones around many points at once. So you could generate 5,10,15 minute isochrones around each of many store locations in a single batch.

This is an ideal way to create accurate delivery zones allowing for more achievable delivery times.
|
Create Bespoke Networks |
The Smart Routing system also provides the flexibility for users to create their own bespoke networks. For example, your own winter network can be created by setting notoriously icy roads to slow speeds and impassable roads set to zero. Alternatively the feature could be used to avoid congested routes during major sporting events, for example.

|
Range of Speeds |
The Smart Routing Drive Time Application allows users to easily switch between different road speeds.
Individual roads are grouped into subclasses such as A roads, B roads and these are all grouped into an overall class called ‘roads’. Users can set speeds for individual roads, the sub class of roads (e.g. the A roads), or the entire ‘roads’ network. |
Real Speeds |
MapMechanics also offers unique real speeds calculated from billions of ITIS GPS signals from real vehicles on the move. Choose between daytime, peak or overnight speeds not just advertised speeds.
